Because the light attracts bugs.
The dark mode, one of the most demanded features, comes with Notepad++ v8.
From this version, Notepad++ can also run in any ARM64 device natively.

A critical dark mode bug has been fixed:
If Notepad++ is installed by an user with admin privilege, the edit zone cannot be applied to the dark theme, after the other users (use the other user accounts on the same machine) switching to dark mode.
Also, more UI components conform to the dark mode in this release.

Markdown (UDL) is also supported in dark mode.

A critical bug (configuration XML files saving performance issue) found in v8.1.7 has been fixed in Notepad++ 8.1.8 release.
Also, a workaround is included in this release. This workaround fixes the visual glitchy in dark mode under Windows 11 - surely due to a bug of Microsoft Windows 11.

v. 8.2 - Notepad++ has come out of its “critical regression state” which was due to the change of its IO routine.
Several long time requested features like “exclude folders in Find in Files” and “auto-save loaded session on exit” are implemented in this release. Also, a workaround for the long time existing issue “UTF-8 detected wrongly as TIS-620 encoding” has been done in this version: TIS-620 encoding won’t be detected automatically anymore. Users have to set the document to TIS-620 encoding manually after loading it. Sorry for the inconvenience.
