The following is a summary of the major features of BabelMap. For further details see the BabelMap Help File.
Unicode Character Grid showing all 96,447 assigned characters and 137,468 private use characters in Unicode 4.0.1.
Select any Unicode block in Planes 0, 1, 2, 14, 15 and 16 from a dropdown list.
Character, NCR (hex), NCR (decimal) and UCN modes allow characters in the edit buffer to be viewed as Unicode characters or as NCR/UCN entities.
Paste any text from the clipboard into the edit buffer, and any NCR codes will be automatically converted to Unicode characters.
Magnify any character in the Unicode Character Grid by right-clicking on it.
Find a character by Unicode hexadecimal or decimal codepoint value.
Search (backwards and forwards through the Unicode Grid) for characters by full or partial name.
Browse through Unicode Grid by plane, block or page of 128 characters.
For CJK Unified Ideographs blocks, browse by radical.
Mandarin, Korean or Vietnamese readings displayed for currently selected CJK unified ideograph (choice of language to show is user selectable).
CJK Radical Lookup Utility allowing user to list all CJK ideographs with a given radical and number of strokes (covers all 70,000+ characters in CJK, CJK-A and CJK-B ranges).
CJK Pinyin Lookup Utility allowing user to list all CJK ideographs with a given Mandarin pinyin pronunciation (covers CJK and CJK-A ranges, plus about 200 characters in CJK-B, in total 25,500+ characters).
Yi Radical Lookup Utility allowing user to list all Yi syllables with a given radical and number of strokes.
Copy selected characters to clipboard, for inserting into any Unicode application.
Save selected characters to file in UTF-8, UTF-16 (Big Endian), UTF-16 (Little Endian), UTF-32 (Big Endian) or UTF-32 (Little Endian) encoding.
Choice of two sizes of dialogue boxes available (small-sized dialogue boxes particularly suitable for 800x600 screen resolutions).
Includes a Unicode Summary utility that provides summary information about Unicode 4.0.1.
Includes a Font Analysis utility that lists all Unicode blocks covered by a particular font or lists all fonts that cover a particular Unicode block.
Includes an Advanced Character Search utility that lists all characters that meet specified criteria.
Open a Properties dialogue box for the selected character, which shows :
Version of Unicode (from Version 1.1 onwards) in which the character was first introduced
Unicode Character Database (UCD) general properties for the character (Name, General Category, Canonical Combining Class, Bidi Class, Decomposition Type & Decomposition Mapping, Numeric Type & Numeric Value, Bidi Mirrored flag, Unicode 1 Name, ISO Comment, Simple Uppercase Mapping, Simple Lowercase Mapping and Simple Titlecase Mapping)
Unicode Code Chart annotations for the character (general notes, aliases and cross-references)
All defined Standardized Variant sequences for the character (currently only Mathematical Operators and Mongolian have defined standardized variants)
Any CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) data for the character; currently only Mandarin pinyin, Korean "Yale" pronunciation and Vietnamese quốc ngữ (or VIQR) readings are provided
Online Help system available (unfortunately now somewhat out of date).
